It’s hard to believe that Michael Jackson is gone. He was influential in popular music for more than 35 years and ranks with Elvis and the Beatles as being among the most popular, influential and inconic performers in the history of popular music. Michael Jackson began his career singing with his brothers when he was only 8 years old and was still on top of his game while rehearsing for an upcoming tour when he died unexpectedly at the age of 50.
He leaves an extraordinary legacy, however – hits with the Jackson 5 such as "ABC", "I Want You Back" and "I’ll Be There." His solo career was a bit sluggish at the start, but yielded hits such as "Ben." It was only upon a meeting with producer Quincy Jones in 1978 that Michael began to create the sort of music that would soon change the world. The 1979 Jones-produced "Off the Wall" yielded five hits, including "Rock With You" and "She’s Out of My Life." And that was only the beginning.
In 1982, Jones and Jackson returned to the studio to record "Thriller" and popular music was never the same. Containing a whopping seven hits, "Thriller" remains the single best selling album in the world, with more than 40 million copies sold. "Beat It’ featured electrifying guitar work by rock legend Eddie Van Halen. The music video for "Billie Jean" was the first video by a black artist ever aired by MTV, and that set the state for such ambitious music videos as "Thriller" and "Bad", which was directed by Oscar-winning director Martin Scorcese.
Michael’s later hits included "Black or White" and "Smooth Criminal" and he demonstrated that he could change his music to suit the times. While Michael may be gone, his albums, "Off the Wall", "Thriller", "Bad", "Invincible", and "HIStory" number among the biggest selling albums ever. And upon word of his untimely death, his albums again became best sellers.
